WHEREAS, Thaddeus Mosley was born in 1926 in nearby New Castle, Pennsylvania. Mr. Mosley would go on to make Pittsburgh his home after studying at the University of Pittsburgh. Thaddeus began working for the United States Postal Service, while writing freelance for The Pittsburgh Courier and for several other national publications; and

WHEREAS, during this time, Thaddeus began his prolific sculpture career, using only a chisel and gouge to maintain the integrity of the original log. Mr. Mosley reworks salvaged timber primarily from indigenous Pennsylvanian hardwoods into biomorphic forms; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Mosley’s artistic influences range from Isamu Noguchi, Constantin Brancusi & Dogon, just to name a few. Mr. Mosely’s “sculptural improvisations” as he calls them, takes cues from the modernist traditions of jazz; and,
WHEREAS, in 2020, Mr. Mosley began working bronze in order to bring his sculptures to life outdoors. Cast from wooden sculptures and meticulously patinated to match the natural gradations of their surfaces, these bronzes immortalize Mr. Mosley’s organic artworks in a non-corrodible material.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare August 29th, 2024, to be “Thaddeus Mosley Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
