Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Western PA Police Athletic League for all of the work it is doing on behalf reducing crime and instilling good values in the hearts of young people; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of July, 2010 to be the “Month of Freedom” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, The Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League is youth crime prevention program that utilizes educational, athletic and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between police officers and youth based on the conviction that young people can develop a strong positive attitude toward police if reached at a young age with a goal of maturity and good citizenship; and,
 
WHEREAS,   Studies have shown that if a young person respects a police officer on the ball field, gym or classroom, the youth will likely come to respect the laws that police officers enforce which is beneficial to  residential and business communities alike; and,
 
WHEREAS,  the 2010 Pittsburgh Gathering of Peace event, using the slogan "Forever Free",  will be held on Thursday, July 1 at the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh community of Allegheny Dwellings; and,    
 
WHEREAS, this event will kick off with the celebration of the grand opening of WPAL North Side Fitness Center located in Allegheny Dwellings, and will include activities such as a boxing show, health fair and community day; and,
 
WHEREAS, it is the hopes of the Western PA Police Athletic League that this event will begin a campaign to drastically reduce the number of violent crimes occurring during the month of July; and,
