WHEREAS, the Division of School Safety works in cooperation with students, school staff, parents, community leaders, city police and other governmental agencies to make certain that Pittsburgh Public Schools are safe, secure and welcoming for students and staff; and,
WHEREAS, CAPA student Chris Old, who is also a Boy Scout and Volunteer Fireman, observed a man in the restroom armed with a gun when he made small talk with the man and calmly proceeded to get help from head custodian Dennis Lanahan; and,
WHEREAS, Dennis Lanahan immediately informed Security Officer Roberts who conducted a pat down and noticed the gun, which fell out of his clothing and Dennis Lanahan separated the man from the gun; and,
WHEREAS, while restraining the man, Security Officer Alfonso Roberts tackled the man to the ground and fell through the Fort Duquesne Boulevard entrance glass doors attempting to prevent the man from proceeding through the school with a gun; and,
WHEREAS, Security Officer Alfonso Roberts and Head Custodian Dennis Lanahan with the help of other faculty, detained the man until police arrived; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend CAPA student Chris Old and Head Custodian Dennis Lanahan for their quick thinking and ability to remain calm in a tense situation and Security Officer Alfonso Roberts, for his bravery in his effort to provide a safe place for our children to learn and grow; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, June 22, 2010, to be "Teamwork Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
