Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby recognizes Michelle Porter, Joy Pekar-Miller and Maria Bethel and all of the parents involved for helping our children to prepare for life and succeed; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, June 22, 2010, Pittsburgh Promise Parent Appreciation Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh's Promise's vision is a city at the core of a strong region whose neighborhoods are vibrant, inclusive and attractive to young and senior people, as well as businesses small and large; and
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Promise seeks to promote a public school district at the center of the city that provides excellent education to all of its children; and
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Promise engages a generation of young people at the heart of the district who are equipped to pursue higher education with vigor and who are dedicated to a life of service; and
 
WHEREAS, a group known as Parents of The Promise and civic leaders hosted an inaugural fundraising luncheon at the Rivers Club on May 24, 2010; and
 
WHEREAS, Michelle Porter, Joy Pekar-Miller and Maria Bethel led the organizing charge of the well-attended luncheon; and
 
WHEREAS, at the inaugural luncheon the Pittsburgh Promise raised approximately $6,000 toward their $15 million goal to provide college scholarships to Pittsburgh Public School students, to promote Pittsburgh School reform and to leverage the development of Pittsburgh neighborhoods.
