Resolution to name the Washington Boulevard Cycle Track to Bud Harris Cycling Track.

WHEREAS, Forrest ("Bud") Harris was a lifelong Pittsburgher.  Although he traveled frequently within the United States and abroad, Pittsburgh was his home and he loved this City; and,
WHEREAS, Bud Harris contributed to the City and its life in many ways.  He was a great photographer and his photographs of life in Pittsburgh's neighborhoods are part of our heritage.  Bud also contributed to life in Pittsburgh through his work in the corporate world; and,
WHEREAS, Among Bud Harris's greatest contributions to the City was his work in the bicycling community.  As a founder of a leading independent bike shop, Bud conveyed his love of cycling to thousands of riders, young and old; and,
WHEREAS, Bud Harris made a great contribution to cycling and the City as a founder of the Thrift Drug Classic.  This great event brought hundreds of elite international competitors and hundreds of thousands of spectators to Pittsburgh.  The race served as the United States Olympic Trials and the Women's Professional Championship, and it showcased Pittsburgh for television viewers around the world; and,
WHEREAS, Closer to home, Bud Harris worked to assure the future of amateur bicycle racing in Pittsburgh.  Bud worked tirelessly to support the acquisition and development of a dedicated track on Washington Boulevard.  Bud brought together representatives of government and racing associations, as well as contractors, and oversaw every detail of this project;
WHEREAS, Bicycling was a passion for Bud, second only to his family and many friends, until his death in 2009.  There is no better way to honor Bud Harris and his many contributions to the City of Pittsburgh and, in particular, the bicycling community, than to put his name on the track that would never exist without him.
Section 1.
That Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby authorize and direct the Mayor and the Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation to name the Washington Boulevard Cycling Track to Bud Harris Cycling Track.
