Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate John H. Bingler, Esq. for his stellar and honorable legal career and for his significant and illustrious service and commitment to the City of Pittsburgh and wants to convey its deep appreciation to him and his wife, Marsha, as they prepare to relocate to Maine to be close to children and grandchildren ; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, June 15, 2010 , to be “ JOHN H. BINGLER DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, , American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, said “It is not the length of life but the depth of life”, and in the case of John H. Bingler, Esq., we count the length and depth of his illustrious life by his remarkable contribution to our city, state and country ; and,

WHEREAS, John Bingler, a graduate of Peabody High School and Princeton University on a full Navy ROTC Scholarship, was a Navy Seal, an Ensign and Lieutenant JG with an Underwater Demolition Team before attending the University of Pittsburgh Law School, graduating third in his class; and,

WHEREAS, John Bingler's legal career intersected with a stellar public service and political career as he served as a Trial Lawyer and an Assistant U.S. Attorney and Chief Narcotics Prosecutor in the late 1960's, in private law practice in the 1970's to the present as Associate, Partner and now Of Counsel. John also served as Chair of the Western District's Third Circuit Lawyers Advisory Committee, Chair of its Complex Cases Subcommittee, Chair of the ACBA Municipal And School Solicitors Section, its Ethics Committee, its Judiciary Committee, Treasurer and Member of the ACBA Board of Governors and President of the Allegheny County Bar Association as well as its Players Troupe for 20 years; and,

WHEREAS, most notably, John Bingler's distinguished service to the City of Pittsburgh began in the early 70's as Director of Public Safety under Mayor Pete Flaherty and President of the City of Pittsburgh Civil Service Commission under Mayor Richard Caliguiri. He also served as Chair of Pittsburgh's Elected Government Study Commission and drafted the Home Rule Charter for Pittsburgh which was adopted in the November 1974 Referendum and most recently, has been one of the two Law Enforcement Professionals on the Citizens Police Review Board, originally appointed in 1998; and,
