Title: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Kim Collins and all other TreeVitalize partners for their dedicated efforts to increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business corridors, and beautify our communities by promoting tree planting and ongoing care and maintenance. NOW, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 5, 2010 to be “South Side Tree Project Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Kim Collins, a native of Jamestown, NY, has settled in the South Side neighborhood  and has made her home in Pittsburgh, PA for over 10 years; and,
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Collins started her graphic design company, Blue Tomato, in a formerly condemned row house in the South Side, which is now a fully renovated, contemporary and sleek space that has gained national and local attention; and,
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Collins saw a great opportunity to apply her love for green space and design talents for the community's benefit, teaming up with the TreeVitalize program, a partnership between the Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the City of Pittsburgh, and the South Side Local Development Company, to form the South Side Tree Project; and,
 
WHEREAS, the South Side Tree Project campaign has received hundreds of tree requests and volunteers have knocked on hundreds of doors to offer people the opportunity to receive free street trees; and,    
 
WHEREAS, on June 5, 2010, a volunteer effort will take place to water, trim and mulch the trees, and celebrate the South Side Tree Project's success, having planted close to 100 street trees in the South Side Flats so far; and,

NOW, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 5, 2010 to be "South Side Tree Project Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
