WHEREAS, Community Day School is a center of community and education, uniting the hearts and minds of the next generation. The school honors Jewish teachings and values, nurturing passion, identity, and integrity in its students so that they may repair the world through tolerance and growth; and,

WHEREAS, Community Day School connects Pittsburgh families and commemorates Jewish history and resistance; and,
WHEREAS, each spring, Community Day School commemorates Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is the day meant to honor and remember the six million Jewish lives lost in the Holocaust, unifying the community in remembrance of the suffering, bravery, strength, and resistance of the victims of Nazi atrocities; and,
WHEREAS, Yom HaShoah has been memorialized since 1959 when it was originally inaugurated by then Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and Israeli President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. In Israel, the day remains a national Memorial Day and a public holiday; and,
WHEREAS, this year's Yom HaShoah will be distinguished by the dedication of a sapling germinated from the horse chestnut tree that grew outside of Anne Frank's window in the Secret Annex; and,
WHEREAS, the sapling is given to Community Day School as one of six donated this year by the Anne Frank Center USA, an organization committed to transformative education. The center has taught hundreds of thousands of students to cherish Anne Frank's legacy; and,
WHEREAS, the Sapling Project has placed saplings coast to coast since 2009, forming a nationwide living memorial that immortalizes Anne's love of nature, keeping her belief in humanity alive in the thriving saplings collected from her chestnut tree that towered as a symbol of hope.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and recognize Community Day School for educating and empowering young minds to honor the legacy of those whose lives were impacted by the events of t...
