Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby join the Allegheny-Fayette Central Labor Council in honoring victims of workplace injury and illness and to keep fighting for the promise of safe jobs for all workers; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 28, 2024 to be "Workers Memorial Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Occupational Safety and Health Act was enacted over fifty years ago on April 28, after unions drew attention to the number of work-related deaths and injuries occurring on the job and organized for safer working conditions, demanding action from their government; and,

 

WHEREAS, each year, thousands of workers are killed and millions suffer injury or illness because of unsafe conditions on the job. Far too many workers die from preventable hazards and many more workers get sick from exposure to toxic chemicals; and,

 

WHEREAS, workers are not adequately protected without retaliation to speak out against unsafe working conditions and to freely join a union, who have fought hard winning protections that have made jobs safer and saved many lives; and,

 

WHEREAS, focus needs to be on the renewal of the promise of safe jobs for all of America’s workers and continue to fight and push forward to ensure safe jobs for all workers through strong unions and strong laws; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Allegheny-Fayette Central Labor Council, under the leadership of President Darrin Kelly, will commemorate Workers Memorial Day on Sunday, April 28th at 12:00 PM on the portico of the City County Building, to honor all workers who have been killed or injured on the job; and,
