Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Debora Whitfield for her dedication and commitment to her community and surrounding areas; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, May 25, 2010, to be “Debora Whitfield Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Ms. Debora Whitfield was one of three staff members from the University of Pittsburgh to receive the Chancellor's Award for Staff for Excellence in Service to the Community; and,
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Whitfield was nominated by Pittsburgh Police Commander Schubert who stated that "it is refreshing to know that there are people like Mrs. Whitfield who are committed to volunteering much of their free time to help improve their community and strive to make it a better place to live and work"; and,
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Whitfield was selected by Chancellor Nordenberg because of her dedication to her home community and her "volunteer efforts that so positively impact our west Pittsburgh communities"; and,
 
WHEREAS, commitment to the community is evident in her various volunteer efforts such as  the Sheraden chapter of the Kiwanis Club where she assists in neighborhood clean-ups, community picnics and Children's Health and Safety fair, to name a few;  she is also a member of the West Pittsburgh Weed and Seed steering committee where she serves on the Prevention, Intervention and Treatment committee and has even traveled out of state to attend National Weed and Seed conventions to learn how other urban areas are dealing with crime, drug prevention and rehabilitation; and,
 
WHEREAS, in addition she is the President of the Sheraden Community Council, deputy grand matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and she became a member of the "Gold Star Families Speak Out" after her son-in-law was killed in Iraq; and,
