WHEREAS, on May 22, 2010 the Carriage House Children's Center will hold a 35th anniversary celebration and will recognize founding director Natalie A. Kaplan as she transitions from the title of "Executive Director" to "President and Founder;" and
WHEREAS, the event will announce the creation of the "Natalie Adler Kaplan Scholarship" that will provide tuition assistance to students of the Center; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Kaplan founded the Center because she felt that traditional half-day programs offered by many other facilities at the time didn't meet the needs of all families, especially families with mothers taking classes; and
WHEREAS, the Center began in a location at Chatham College with fewer than 20 students and it now operates in the Wightman School Community Building and serves more than 175 students with full day programs and summer camps; and
WHEREAS, the goal of the Center is to provide quality education for infants, toddlers and preschoolers that meets the family's needs and treats every child as a unique and valued person; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Kaplan has always enjoyed working with young children and earned a B.S. degree from The Pennsylvania State University and a Master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh to further her goals of educating children; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Kaplan and her husband, Judge Lawrence Kaplan, serve on the National Council of Jewish Women's advisory committee that supports the Children's Playrooms in the Courts program.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends Natalie A. Kaplan for 35 years of work nurturing and educating children at the Carriage House Children's Center; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares May 22, 2010, "Natalie A. Kaplan Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
