WHEREAS, May 2 thru May 8 is National Pet Week; and
WHEREAS, National Pet Week was jointly founded in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association Auxiliary to foster responsible pet ownership; and
WHEREAS, the 2010 theme for National Pet Week is "Pets and People - Healthy Together," promoting the importance of exercise for people and pets; and
WHEREAS, National Pet Week recognizes the human-animal bond, and increases public awareness of veterinary medicine; and
WHEREAS, National Pet Week raises awareness of the role, value and contribution to society of working companion animals; and
WHEREAS, National Pet Week recognizes the physical and emotional health benefits that companion animals and their owners provide each other; and
WHEREAS, National Pet Week has become widely celebrated throughout the United States, and increases public awareness of services available from professionals who work with animals;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim May 2-8, 2010, as "National Pet Week" in the City of Pittsburgh.
