WHEREAS, May 3rd through 7th is National Teacher Appreciation Week; and
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Public Schools boast approximately 2040 professional teachers; and
WHEREAS, we are grateful for the energy, commitment, time and courage of our teachers in the Pittsburgh Public Schools who skillfully sculpt our children in positive, productive and creative ways; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Public Schools was recently ranked 7th in the nation among public school systems in large U.S. cities in the GreatSchools report entitled Best Cities to Live and Learn 2010; and
WHEREAS, according to GreatSchools, one of the country's leading independent sources of information on school performance, the District earned that ranking because "the steady improvements in rankings and test scores are proof that its efforts are taking hold;" and
WHEREAS, National Teacher Appreciation Week is the perfect time of the year to take a moment to show your appreciation to teachers for all the effort they put in each day to teach and encourage our City's children.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby recognizes the teachers of Pittsburgh Public Schools for helping our children to prepare for life and succeed; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, May 4, 2010, National Teacher Appreciation Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
