Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED That the People of the City of Pittsburgh stand in solidarity with the People of Poland during this time of national tragedy; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That the City of Pittsburgh declares today, Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 a City wide day of memoriam in honor of the Polish leadership who died in service of their country en route to Katy?, Russia.

Whereas, on April 10th, 2010 a plane carrying 97 passengers, 88 of which were members of a Polish State Delegation, embarked on a diplomatic mission to Russia; and
 
Whereas, with Russian leaders, the Polish delegation was to commemorate the Katyń Massacre of 1940 where 22,000 Polish officers were killed by Soviet secret police; and
 
Whereas, while preparing for landing, the plane crashed, tragically killing all 97 passengers on board; and

Whereas, this national tragedy is an historic and unprecedented loss for any nation; and
 
Whereas, the people of Poland have fought for centuries to create, establish and maintain a stable, peaceful, and free democracy under the rule of law; and
 
Whereas, the close ties between Poland and the United States have fostered a special and strong relationship that flourished under the leadership of President Kaczyński; and
 
Whereas, Poland's friends and allies have honored them by declaring days of mourning in memoriam of the dedicated public servants and Polish citizens who perished on April 10th.
