Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Amen Corner for recognizing Judge Kate Ford Elliot with the Judge Robert E. Dauer Award for Judicial Leadership and Excellence for her outstanding career and achievement in the field of law and justice; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, May 7, 2009, to be “JUDGE KATE FORD ELLIOT DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Amen Corner is a prestigious organization which has been a Pittsburgh tradition since 1870 and whose purpose is to encourage camaraderie, fraternity and relationships amongst people of all walks of life; and,

WHEREAS, the Amen Corner has been honoring members of the Judiciary of Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 50 years and for the last seven years has honored the memory of Judge Robert E. Dauer with an award in his name for Judicial Leadership and Excellence ; and,

WHEREAS, this year's co-recipient of the Judge Robert E. Dauer Award for Judicial Leadership and Excellence is the Honorable Kate Ford Elliot, President Judge of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania; and,

WHEREAS, Judge Kate Ford Elliot, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and with Masters in Education and her Law Degree from Duquesne University, was the first woman to hold the position of President Judge for any Appellate Court in Pennsylvania; and,

WHEREAS, Judge Ford Elliot, having begun her career as a teacher and reading specialist for the Pittsburgh Board of Edcuation working with reading disabled children, has served as a judge on the Superior Court since 1990, retained in 1999 and 2009 ; and,

WHEREAS, Judge Kate Ford Elliot is President-Elect of the Council of Chief Judges of State Courts of Appeal and is a member of the National Association of Women Judges and the American Judicature Society. She served on the Pennsylvania Commission on Justice Initiatives, specifically working on a Task Force which led to the creation of drug and mental health courts statewide. A frequent lecturer and panelist on issues of appellate practice and legal ethics, she has received the Distinguished Law Alumni Award from Duquesne Law School , the Woman of Spirit Award from Carlow College the 2009 Jeannette Reibman Award from the Federation of Democratic Women and the St. Thomas More Award .
