Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Amen Corner for recognizing Judge Joseph M. James with the Judge Robert E. Dauer Award for Judicial Leadership and Excellence for his outstanding career and achievement in the field of law and justice; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, May 7, 2009, to be “JUDGE JOESPH M. JAMES DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Amen Corner is a prestigious organization which has been a Pittsburgh tradition since 1870 and whose purpose is to encourage camaraderie, fraternity and relationships amongst people of all walks of life; and,

WHEREAS, the Amen Corner has been honoring members of the Judiciary of Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 50 years and for the last seven years has honored the memory of Judge Robert E. Dauer with an award in his name for Judicial Leadership and Excellence ; and,

WHEREAS, this year's co-recipient of the Judge Robert E. Dauer Award for Judicial Leadership and Excellence is the Honorable Joseph M. James, former President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County ; and,

WHEREAS, Judge Joseph James, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Law School, was nominated for Judge by the former Governor Robert P. Casey, confirmed by the State Senate in 1987 and elected to a full term later that year; and,

WHEREAS, Judge James was initially assigned to the Criminal Division and in 1992 moved to the Civil Division where he still is assigned today. He served as the Administrative Judge of the Civil Division from 2000-2003 and served as President Judge from 2003 to 2008; and,

WHEREAS, Judge Joseph James is a former member of the Judicial Inquiry and Review Board, the Judicial Council of Pennsylvania, the Executive Board of the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges, State Trial Judges' Ethics Advisory Board and the National Conference of Metropolitan Courts. He is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges, the Court of Judicial Discipline and an adjunct Professor at the Duquesne University School of Law.
