Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Amen Corner for recognizing Wendell G. Freeland with their Professional Achievement Award for his outstanding career and accomplishments in the field of law and justice; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, May 7, 2009, to be “WENDELL G. FREELAND DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Amen Corner is a prestigious organization which has been a Pittsburgh tradition since 1870 and whose purpose is to encourage camaraderie, fraternity and relationships amongst people of all walks of life; and,

WHEREAS, the Amen Corner has been honoring members of the Judiciary of Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 50 years and members of the Allegheny County Bar for the last several years , and this year will recognize an attorney for a lifetime of professional achievement; and,

WHEREAS, this year's recipient of the Amen Corner Professional Achievement Award is Wendell G. Freeland; and,

WHEREAS, Wendell G. Freeland a cum laude graduate of Howard University in 1947 and from the University of Maryland in 1950 where he was the first African American elected to the Order of the Coif, has had an outstanding and respected career in Federal and State Courts at the Trial and Appellate levels; and,

WHEREAS, Wendell Freeland was the first President of the Neighborhood Legal Services Association , a member of the Judicial Conduct Board of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a member of the Appellate Rules Committee of the Supreme Court, a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association House of Delegates, Chair of the Federal Court Section of the Allegheny County Bar Association, a member of the Executive Board of the Trial Lawyers in Criminal Court, a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association Committee on Opportunities for Minorities in the Legal Profession and a Chair of the Homer S. Brown Law Association; and,

WHEREAS, Wendell G. Freeland has been President of the Urban League of Pittsburgh, Senior Vice -President of the National Urban League, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies and a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Pittsburgh, Westminster College and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
