Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize April 22, 2010 as Earth Day and encourage communities to get involved; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, April 13, 2010, to be “Environment Awareness Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, this year Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, 2010 and marks the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day; and,
 
WHEREAS, beginning in 1962 and over a period of seven years, the late Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin spoke on environmental issues across the country in order to put the environment onto the national political agenda and in the summer of 1969, the idea to organize a huge protest regarding what was happening to the environment came to him; and,
 
WHEREAS, in the spring of 1970 the first nationwide grassroots demonstration titled "Earth Day" took place with 20 million demonstrators and thousands of schools and local communities organized by Denis Hayes all of which led to the first environmental legislation called the "Clean Air and Clean Water Acts; and,
 
WHEREAS; since 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated annually in April with local activities such as community clean-ups, restoration projects, parades, concerts and fairs which rekindle public commitment and ongoing environmental education; and,
