WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Action Against Rape is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1972 by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Organization of Women (NOW) in response to a series of rapes and growing public concern ; and,
WHEREAS, this grassroots effort was first organized as a Task Force on Sexual Assault to discuss and develop a response to the problem of rape and whose goal was to initiate a comprehensive program for rape research, treatment and prevention; and,
WHEREAS, PAAR's mission is to respond to survivors of sexual violence with crisis intervention and counseling, to educate the community to prevent sexual violence and to advocate for systems to respond to and prevent sexual violence; and,
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Action Against Rape has become the premier agency offering a myriad of critical services to victims of sexual violence and education, consultation and advocacy assistance to professionals and agencies in Western Pennsylvania ; and,
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Action Against Rape will hold its signature event, A Celebration of Survivors, on Saturday, April 10, 2010, to honor the survivors of sexual violence with a theme of Courage, Healing and Trust ; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Pittsburgh Action Against Rape for 38 years of providing crucial and necessary services to victims of sexual violence and for becoming the premier agency dedicated to prevention of sexual violence and to education and advocacy in Western Pennsylvania ; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate with Pittsburgh Action Against Rape in its Celebration of Survivors Event to honor those survivors of sexual violence who they themselves demonstrate courage , healing and trust.
