WHEREAS, James Albert Fields, Sr., began his days on September 16, 1928, in Bessemer, Alabama, with the promise of a life full of love and devotion; and
WHEREAS, having been raised on the North Side, Oliver High School graduate Master Sergeant Fields served in the U.S. Army and Air Force for twenty-nine years, receiving the Bronze Star Medal, Air Force Commendation, NCO Professional Military Education Ribbon, Armed Forces Reservist Medal, and Good Conduct Medal in addition to many other honoraria; and
WHEREAS, upon retiring from the service in August 1983, Master Sergeant Fields became the first male School Crossing Guard in the City of Pittsburgh, serving the youth of our City proudly for twenty years, and earning the nickname "Top Sergeant," which even appeared on his license plate (TOP SGT); and
WHEREAS, Master Sergeant Fields was a devoted husband to his loving wife Elva E. Fields, father to James A. Fields, Jr., Vincent L. Fields, William C. Robinson, and Sylvia Robinson, and grandfather to Kenneth Bates, Dana Robinson, Ashley Robinson, Todd Doster, John Tucker, Rosharon Washington, Sean Bates, and Erinn Thompson, and great-grandfather to Brennan Robinson, Jarod McMahon, Bria Bates, Brice Bates, and Caleb Robinson; and
WHEREAS, this sweet and loving gentleman who savored bologna sandwiches, bananas, sweets, Kung Fu, John Wayne movies, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, whom his family referred to as James, Dad, PaJames, Granddad, and also as "Spit 'N Polish" for how immaculately he dressed, left this life and his many loving family members and friends peacefully on February 4, 2010;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby offer condolence to the family, and does honor and remember with pride, sadness and heartfelt tribute Master Sergeant James Albert Fields, Sr.
