Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the American Cancer Society's staff and selfless volunteers for their work in preventing cancer and supporting cancer patients; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, March 9, 2010, to be “A Day with more Birthdays” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, cancer will strike 74,000 people in Pennsylvania this year and it is estimated that about 169,000 cancer deaths are expected to be caused by tobacco use; about one-third of the expected 562,340 deaths will be related to overweight or obesity, physical inactivity and poor nutrition all of which has made cancer the second most common cause of death in the U.S., exceeded only by heart disease; and,
WHEREAS, cancers that can be prevented by changing your lifestyle or by being detected with early screening account for at least half of all new cancer cases; and,
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society provides valuable resources in Pittsburgh to help people prevent cancer diagnosis, including creative challenges such as the Great American Smokeout, the Great American Health Check and the Great American Eat Right Challenge; and,
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society provides valuable services to patients and their families in Pittsburgh to help them get well after a cancer diagnosis, including transportation, lodging, information, and support; and,
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society relies on grants and fundraising efforts such as “Relay for Life”, “DetermiNation” endurance event programs and “Daffodil Days”, which was inspired by the first flower of spring and is the American Cancer Society's symbol of hope for a world with less cancer and more birthdays. They also rely on countless dedicated volunteers who are appreciated; and,
WHEREAS, the Daffodil Days event will be held March 15-21, 2010 and we encourage all citizens of Pittsburgh to join with the American Cancer Society volunteers to make this event a great success by reserving daffodils to support the American Cancer Society's lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem by fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community; and,
