Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor the extraordinary life work of Sidney Singer and extends condolences to his wife, Barbara and his five daughters and notes that his work and devotion to his community and family be for a blessing.

WHEREAS, American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, said "It is not the length of life but the depth of life", and in the case of Sidney Singer, we count the length and depth of his illustrious life by his remarkable contribution to society ; and,
 
WHEREAS, Sidney Singer,who passed away on January 13, 2010, has been the driving force behind Veterans Place of Washington Boulevard, a $2.5 million transitional housing facility in Larimer for military men and women struggling with psychiatric issues, substance abuse and homelessness, a project which is the testament to Mr. Singer's tenacity in overcoming ten years of roadblocks and complications; and,                            
 
WHEREAS, Sidney Singer, a Pittsburgh native, served in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1945, working as an aviation mechanic on aircraft electrical systems and becoming crew chief on B-24s and B-19s and ultimately an electrical instructor on B-29s, setting up schools at airfields around the country; and,
 
WHEREAS, After the service, Sid worked in construction and maintenance, hauled steel, sold appliances and worked as a bouncer at bars owned by relatives but since retiring, he put his full time efforts into solving housing problems for veterans and seniors ; and,
 
WHEREAS, as Commander of  Jewish War Veterans Post 718 of Monroeville, Sid spearheaded a HUD-supported senior citizen high rise in Monroeville with 101 units followed by projects for homeless veterans; and,
 
WHEREAS, in 2007, Sidney Singer won a prestigious Jefferson Award for Public Service for his outstanding work on behalf of veterans ;and,
