Title: WHEREAS, Councilman Bruce Kraus was first elected as a member of Pittsburgh City Council in 2007 and began serving on January 7, 2008. He was elected President of Council by his colleagues in January 2014 and re-elected 3 consecutive sessions ending January 2020; and,

WHEREAS, Councilman Bruce Kraus was first elected as a member of Pittsburgh City Council in 2007 and began serving on January 7, 2008. He was elected President of Council by his colleagues in January 2014 and re-elected 3 consecutive sessions ending January 2020; and,

WHEREAS, born and raised in the South Side, Bruce got involved in public office because of his passion to help people. While Bruce was the first councilman who was gay, he never wanted to be known as the "gay councilman" and has been dedicated to fighting for the equal rights and well-being of all of the citizens of Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS, during his tenure, Councilman Kraus has sponsored and supported legislation regarding the safety and well-being of his constituents, such as the Responsible Hospitality Institute's Sociable City Plan and the City's Social Host Ordinance. Bruce also supported legislation requiring proper reporting of lost and stolen handguns; and,

WHEREAS, committed to the revival of the historic and traditional beauty of many Pittsburgh neighborhoods, he was instrumental in reopening the South Side Market House. He also assisted in securing $4 million renovation of the Carson Street branch of the Carnegie Library and was instrumental in saving and renovating the Knoxville and Carrick branches of the Carnegie Library. In addition, he secured space for a Carnegie "Pop-Up Library" in Allentown; and,

WHEREAS, Councilman Kraus is a fierce defender of four legged residents as well, sponsoring legislation for the humane treatment of animals - banning bullhooks and red-eared sliders - and raising thousands for animal adoption. He also helped lead the Riverfront Off-Leash Exercise Area project; and,

WHEREAS, Bruce serves on the Board of the Brashear Association, the Carnegie Library, Children's Sickle Cell Foundation, and the Oakland Business Improvement District and is on the Advisory Board to Shepherd Wellness. He has also served on the Boards of Carnegie Mellon, th...
