Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Greater Pittsburgh Area Support/ Community Group for their efforts to promote awareness of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in the Western PA area and for their work in the area of education, research and advocacy with the National Psoriasis Foundation and the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations ; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, October 29, 2009, to be “ WORLD PSORIASIS DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Psoriasis is a non-contagious, chronic, inflammatory disease of the immune system affecting 125 million people worldwide and 320,000 adults in Pennsylvania ; and,
 
WHEREAS, People with psoriasis are at an elevated risk for heart disease, diabetes, liver disease and obesity and report that their disease impacts their daily lives; and,                            
 
WHEREAS, The National Psoriasis Foundation, from its humble beginnings in Portland, OR, has grown into a national non-profit whose mission is to find a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and to eliminate their devastating effects through research, advocacy and education and has called upon Congress to improve the quality of life of those with the disease by ensuring access to quality care, increasing awareness and understanding of these diseases and by boosting federal research efforts to hasten the discovery of a cure; and,
 
WHEREAS, World Psoriasis Day , initiated by the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations, is a global effort to raise public awareness, improve access to treatment, increase understanding and  build unity amongst the psoriasis community ; and,
