WHEREAS, Gertrude L. Pinno was born on October 17, 1939. She has always been a advocate for education and understood the importance of parent involvement in a child's early education experience; and
WHEREAS, as a PTA President, Ms. Pinno served many years supporting school administration's efforts to actively involve parents in the lives of their children. She would even go to such great lengths as to hosting dinners at her home with teachers to reaffirm her support of their efforts; and
WHEREAS, as an advocate of civil rights, Ms. Pinno served as one of the organizers of the Garfield Heights bus trip to the March on Washington. With her commitment to change and equality, Gertrude has worked side by side with the likes of Senator Jim Ferlo and members of the Community Action Pittsburgh Political Group; and
WHEREAS, her passion led her to serve as Program Administrator for the Garfield YMCA Food Bank and On-Site Feeding Program in which she authored several proposals to secure funding for its continued operation; and

Now, Therefore, be it resolved that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby recognizes Gertrude L. Pinno for her many accomplishments, leading by example, and for her unrelenting commitment to educating communities throughout the City; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim Sunday, October 17, 2009, to be designated, "Gertrude L. Pinno" day in the City of Pittsburgh.
