WHEREAS, American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, said “It is not the length of life but the depth of life”, and in the case of Professor Joseph Eaton, we count the length and depth of his illustrious life by his remarkable contribution to society ; and,
WHEREAS, Professor Joseph Eaton celebrated his 90th birthday on September 28, 2009, and with his family and friends on October 3, 2009; and,
WHEREAS, Joseph Eaton was born in Nurnberg, Germany in 1919, and came to the United States as a 14 year old having lost his parents and grandparents in the Holocaust, served in the United States Army and attended Cornell University for his BA in Rural Sociology and Columbia University for his Ph.D.; and,
WHEREAS, Professor Joe Eaton has been married to Helen Goodman Eaton since 1948, and is the father of David, Seth, Jonathan and Deborah; and,
WHEREAS, Professor Joseph Eaton, a recognized American Sociologist and Anthropologist listed in Who is Who in the World for published research and academic career, is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh, having served there as Professor in the School of Public and International Affairs, Chairman of the Economic and Social Development Sequence, Director of the Social Science Unit at the School of Public Health, Professor in the School of Social Work and Acting Chair in the Department of Sociology; ; and,
WHEREAS, Professor Eaton's academic resume includes Professorships at UCLA, Western Reserve University and Wayne State University which included research projects, administrative leadership, international teaching and publications in Social Work, Social Welfare, Mental Health, Planning and Community Development, Crime and Delinquency, Medical and Higher Education, Research and Evaluation, Public Policy and International Relations as well as books, journal articles and public testimony; and,
WHEREAS, Professor Joseph Eaton's prolific career is fitting testimony to the length and depth of his year...
