WHEREAS, Andrew Carnegie said, "There is not such a cradle of democracy upon the earth as the Free Public Library, this republic of letters, where neither rank, office, nor wealth receives the slightest consideration."; and
WHEREAS, Andrew Carnegie's dream of free libraries for his hometown still lives on, with nine-teen Carnegie library branches in the Pittsburgh system; and
WHEREAS, the South Side Branch of Carnegie Library is celebrating its 100th Anniversary on Saturday, October 3, 2009; and
WHEREAS, built in 1909 and designed by the architectural firm of Alden and Harlow, the Library has now been designated as a historic landmark by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation; and
WHEREAS, it has served many generations of, both, South Side and Pittsburgh residents, giving many of them the inspiration and foundation to pursue knowledge and higher education; and
WHEREAS, we recognize that our libraries are among the things that make Pittsburgh great.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does, hereby, commend all those who have worked to preserve and advance the South Side Library throughout its 100 years of service and commitment to all who have sought knowledge, resources and enjoyment, within its walls.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does, hereby, proclaim Saturday, October 3, 2009, to be
South Side Library Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
