WHEREAS, on October 3, 2009, the Alliance for Humanitarian Initiatives, Nonviolence and Spiritual Advancement will hold the Mahatma Gandhi Birthday Celebration 2009 in Bellefield Auditorium at the University of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 2nd, International Day of Non-Violence, in honor of the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the strategy of non-violence; and
WHEREAS, the Alliance seeks to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi as a global humanitarian figure, promote his legacy of nonviolence, and engage youth in appreciating Gandhi's powerful message; and
WHEREAS, the Alliance seeks to promote virtues of simple living and harmony with nature, as well as expand the study of Gandhian philosophy; and
WHEREAS, the Gandhi Birthday Celebration seeks to pay tribute to the rich Indian culture through dance performances, cultural activities, and inter-faith religious practices.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the Mahatma Gandhi Birthday Celebration 2009 and thanks the Alliance for Humanitarian Initiatives, Nonviolence and Spiritual Advancement for celebrating Gandhi's teachings in Pittsburgh; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares October 2, 2009, "Mahatma Gandhi Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
