Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Sisters of Charity for their remarkable works and dedication to our community; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates the Sisters of Charity upon the joyous celebration of their two hundredth anniversary and declares Saturday, September 19, 2009, to be “Sisters of Charity Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, The Sisters of Charity of the United States, were founded by Saint Elizabeth Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland on July 31, 1809; and,
 
WHEREAS, for 200 years, Sisters of Charity have served in many states in the Union, ministering in pre-school, elementary and high schools, colleges and universities; founding hospitals and in hospital administration, nursing and technology; in social services from the country side to the inner city; and,
 
WHEREAS, thousands of Sisters of Charity have committed their lives to God in fidelity to their religious vows, in their dedication of each day to prayer and meditation and in their witness to the Church by a life in community; and,  
 
WHEREAS, a community rooted in the tradition of Saint Elizabeth Seton, the Sisters of Charity began their service to the City of Pittsburgh in 1874 at Sacred Heart Parish in Shadyside; and,
 
WHEREAS, in 1882, they established their home in Greensburg, Pennsylvania and named it Seton Hill and have been know since as the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill.
