Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Peoples' Summit, all associated institutions and organizations, and the citizen volunteers who worked tirelessly to make it a success. Their outstanding efforts are certain to create a greater understanding about the challenges we face, the solutions we should explore and the social dialogue that is necessary for the realization of a better world. Further more, the citizens of our region are encouraged to seize the opportunity to participate in this significant and historic event.

WHEREAS, the Peoples' Summit is scheduled to coincide with the G-20 in Pittsburgh and will take place on Saturday, September 19, Monday, September 21 and Tuesday, September 22, 2009; and,
WHEREAS, the Peoples' Summit will be held at two historically significant locations, the Twentieth Century Club in Oakland and the New Hazlett Theater on the North Side; and,
WHEREAS, the Peoples' Summit has been organized by educators from Carnegie Mellon University and other educational institutions in the Pittsburgh area, the Brother's Brother Foundation, Global Solutions Pittsburgh, the Three Rivers Community Foundation, the Thomas Merton Center, Pennsylvania State Senator Jim Ferlo and over 30 citizen volunteers ; and,
WHEREAS, the Peoples' Summit will be an educational dialogue which will bring together international, national and local speakers, diverse panels and interactive workshops, involving community residents, trade unionists, human rights and environmental activists, students, religious groups and others, focusing on pressing economic, social and political issues, including the role and future of the G-20 ; and,
WHEREAS, the Peoples' Summit seeks to utilize the G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh as an opportunity to educate the general public, drawing together people of diverse and divergent perspectives, sharing their thoughts and concerns about the problems facing our communities and our world and helping develop a dialogue about the kind of world we would like to see; and,
WHEREAS, those planning the Peoples' Summit intend to project an informed and reasoned public discourse, inspired by mutual respect and spirit of solidarity seeking a fruitful impact on the G-20 Summit, on the elected officials of our region and on people in diverse, local, national and global communities; and,
