WHEREAS In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a special day just for Grandparents; and
WHEREAS National Grandparents Day was signed into law by President Jimmy Carter in 1978 designating September to celebrate the holiday, signifying the “autumn years” of life; and
WHEREAS Grandparents Day has a threefold purpose: To honor grandparents, to help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer, and to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children; and
WHEREAS The first Sunday after Labor Day was designed as National Grandparents Day; and
WHEREAS Along with honoring Grandparents the day should also be dedicated to remembering shut-ins and those in nursing homes who are unable to be with their families or have no families; and
WHEREAS Your Sister's Project Inc. Grandparent's program is a local consortium of educational, governmental, community-based and faith-based organizations that works to improve grandparents as caregivers; and
WHEREAS Your Sister's Project, Inc. a 501 ©3 tax exempt public and charitable organization will be holding its 2009 Grandparents of Distinction Awards and Dinner Sunday September 13, 2009, at the Senator John Heinz History Center.
WHEREAS Your Sister's Project Inc. has worked very hard to educate the people about the important contributions senior citizens and grandparents are making in the lives of their families; and
WHEREAS Your Sister's Project Inc. not only appreciates the efforts of grandparents but the knowledge and wisdom that Grandparents can provide to our young people.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby wish to commend Your Sister's Project Inc. for their efforts in educating the community on the importance and value of Grandparents and declares September 13, 2009 to be in the City of Pittsburgh Grandparents Day in the City of ...
