Title: NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the importance of every branch of the Carnegie Library, including the Beechview Branch and also recognizes that the lose of any branch would have significant consequences for the communities of Pittsburgh. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare that Tuesday, September 8, 2009 to be “Beechview Library Day” in the City of Pittsburgh, in recognition of all that the Beechview Library has given to the community.

WHEREAS, the Beechview Branch Library was opened in June 1967 ; and
WHEREAS, the Beechview branch of the Carnegie Library provides a rich resource and outreach to the schools and children of Beechview; and
WHEREAS, Audrey Iacone, the head librarian of the Beechview Library, puts together vital programming for the children, teens, and adults of the Beechview neighborhood to participate in; and
WHEREAS, the Beechview Library was an integral part of the planning for the 2005 Beechview centennial and has participated in the Pretty Up Beechview community clean up program by founding the Pretty Up Beechview Junior program to encourage students to help clean up the community during their summer break; and
WHEREAS, through years of economic decline in Beechview's business district, the Beechview Library has stood tall as the heart and bedrock of the community, sustaining Beechview through many hardships; and
WHEREAS, every branch of the Carnegie Library system is an integral part of the fabric of community life in the City of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, the closure of any branch of the Carnegie Library, including the Beechview branch, would have widespread consequences beyond losing the convenience of a local branch. After school programming for hundreds of students, adult book clubs, programming for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, Spanish language programming, and events for families would all be lost.
