WHEREAS, The Greater Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church will host the 142ND annual Pittsburgh Conference of the Third Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church on Wednesday September 2, 2009 through Sunday September 6, 2009; and
WHEREAS, the 142nd Annual AME Pittsburgh Conference will include Revival Services on September 2nd-4th in the evenings, beginning at 8:00 PM at the Greater Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church at 3600 California Avenue; and
WHEREAS, this year's annual conference welcomes The Right Reverend C. Garnett Henning, Presiding Bishop of the 3rd Episcopal District and his wife, Episcopal Supervisor, Ernestine Lee Henning.; and
WHEREAS, the African Methodist Episcopal Church was born Sunday, November 4, 1787, when Richard Allen, Absalom Jones and other persons of color walked out of St. George Methodist Church because of racism and then organized Bethel Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the African Methodist Episcopal Church is to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and environmental needs of all people by spreading Christ's liberating gospel through word and deed; and
WHEREAS, the motto of the African Methodist Episcopal Church is "God Our Father, Christ Our Redeemer, the Holy Spirit Our Comforter, Humankind Our Family" is a great summary of what the African Methodist Episcopal Church believes and is a testament to the modernity of the values of the AME;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby welcome Bishop C. Garnett Henning Senior and Mrs. Ernestine Lee Henning, and delegates of the 142nd annual AME conference; and
RESOLVED FURTHER, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the week of August 31 through September 6, 2009, to be “Greater Allen AME Church and Annual Conference Week” in the City of Pittsburgh.
