WHEREAS, Gist Street Reading Series, Open Thread and isReads have teamed up to form a local edition of isReads: The Journal Outdoors; and
WHEREAS, the isReads: The Journal Outdoors program has already been successfully held in Nashville and Baltimore; and
WHEREAS, the mission of The Journal Outdoors is to place poetry and fiction where people would not expect it: at bus stops, in grocery carts, under rocks, and in doorways; and
WHEREAS, The Journal Outdoors has installed poetry at various sites around the city, including Lawrenceville Pavement Shoes, Pittsburgh City Council, the Frick Park Dog Run, and the fountain at the Point; and
WHEREAS, by discovering the poems and prose scattered around the city, isReaders can experience the city's neighborhoods through more interactive and exciting ways; and
WHEREAS, as a feature of Open Thread's small press festival SPF, volunteers went around the city dispersing isReads poems on surfaces across Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, Gist Street, isReads, and Open Thread have each collected five poems or short stories for this issue of The Journal Outdoors from emerging and established writers at the national and local levels.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes Gist Street, isReads, and Open Thread's "Journal Outdoors" program for utilizing poetry to rediscover Pittsburgh; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares July 21, 2009, "Journal Outdoors Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
