Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Pittsburgh Filmmakers/ Pittsburgh Center for the Arts for their remarkable contribution to the arts community in the region and congratulates Tina Williams Brewer for a lifetime of extraordinary accomplishment ; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, June 12, 2009, to be “ TINA WILLIAMS BREWER DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Pittsburgh Filmmakers are committed to the artist and the advancement of artistic excellence in visual arts, specifically film, video, photography, digital media, and fine and creative arts and crafts, the provision of equipment and facilities for artists , instructional programs and the stimulation of public understanding and awareness through exhibitions, demonstrations and sales ; and,
WHEREAS, the Lifetime Achievement Award of Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts honors accomplished artists whose involvement with the Center and the Pittsburgh region has made a lasting impact, and as part of this prestigious honor, PF/PCA presents and exhibition of the artist's work to celebrate their contribution to the region's culture; and,
WHEREAS, Tina Williams Brewer is an internationally honored story quilter and only the second artist to receive the PFM/PCA Lifetime Achievement Award. She is best known for her artistic exploration of African American history and the personal experiences associated with it by using symbolism to create colorful and ornate quilts, drawing inspiration from spiritual and family focused issues; and,
WHEREAS, the exhibit, Tina Williams Brewer: Guided by the Ancestors, highlights a selection from her nearly 30 years of creating work and features her latest series based on the Pittsburgh Courier's 100th Anniversary in which she uses images and stories from the past century as source material to celebrate notable African Americans' impact on the shaping of American culture; and,
WHEREAS, Tina Williams Brewer is involved in every aspect of the Center's
programming through exhibiting in the galleries, teaching in the school and residency programs and acting as a mentor and resource to aspiring artists; and,
