Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend The European Center of Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh for its important work and for convening this Policy Conference at the University of Pittsburgh on June 11-13, 2009, and; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby welcome Ambassador Luis Gallegos to our city and commends his leadership within the disability community and lauds his international efforts on disability and further recognizes the hard work, achievements and dedication that Ambassador Luis Gallegos has exhibited throughout his career which serves as an example of the commitment to the betterment of the international community that all should strive to attain.

WHEREAS, The European Union Center of Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh is at the core of the interdisciplinary study of Europe and the European Union at the University of Pittsburgh, and , in cooperation with academic and research units throughout the University, offers a wide array of programs for students, faculty and the public throughout the tri-state region; and,
WHEREAS, The European Center of Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh, in collaboration with the University's highly regarded School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, is hosting a Policy Conference on “Accessibility in the Context of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” to bring together experts on accessibility from Europe and the U.S., including the U.S. Government and the European Commission; and,
WHEREAS, the purpose of the seminar is to explore transatlantic perspectives on accessibility in connection with implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and will explore the Convention's emphasis on accessibility from a human rights perspective ; and,
WHEREAS, Ambassador Luis Gallegos, Ambassador from Ecuador to the United States since 2005 and a Chairman of the UN Ad Hoc Committee on the International Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, played a critical role in the negotiations that led to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities ; and,
