Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Three Rivers Arts Festival on its dedicated commitment to exposing the community to the arts; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of June as “THREE RIVERS ARTS FESTIVAL MONTH” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Three Rivers Arts Festival was founded in 1960 by the Women's Committee of the Carnegie Museum of Art; and,
WHEREAS, held annually since its founding, the Three Rivers Arts Festival has provided free and public access to thousands of visual and performing artists to millions of citizens, breaking down traditional and economic barriers to art and culture; and,
WHEREAS, the Three Rivers Arts Festival has evolved into a beloved Pittsburgh tradition, heralding the return of summer and contributing to the city's reputation as a major destination for the arts; and,
WHEREAS, in January of 2009, the Three Rivers Arts Festival merged with The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, furthering the shared mission of each organization to foster economic and regional development through and to connect the community with the arts, and to enhance the quality of life in the City of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, for the second year, implementation of the Zero-Waste Initiative will give patrons the opportunity to compost or recycle most waste produced during the Three Rivers Arts Festival, one more way in which Pittsburgh maintains its position as one of the world's top ten cleanest cities; and,
WHEREAS, the Three Rivers Arts Festival will celebrate its 50th anniversary in June of 2009 with corporate, foundation, and public support from more than 50 organizations and individuals including the Department of Community and Economic Development, The Heinz Endowments, The Grable Foundation, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts; and,
WHEREAS, the Three Rivers Arts Festival will return to its original home at Point State Park to present more than 500 artists during its 50th run, including COL and KRUNK, local student-led initiatives intended to engage youth from low-income communities in music, Booker T., the Wailers, ArtUp, and Associated Artists of Pittsburgh
