Title: BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, May 21, 2009, to be “DR. MOE COLEMAN DAY ” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, POWER's mission is to provide gender- specialized quality treatment and support services to women who are changing their lives through recovery from alcohol and other drugs ; and,
WHEREAS, POWER envisions a day when all women struggling with addiction will embrace the journey and realize the promises of recovery, enhancing and strengthening relationships with children, family and community; and,
WHEREAS, POWER PROMISE- A NIGHT OF HOPE is an evening of music, food and festivities as POWER celebrates its 18th anniversary and honors Dr. Morton Coleman with its Window of Hope Award; and,
WHEREAS, POWER's Window of Hope Award was created to acknowledge and honor individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to POWER in support of the mission by volunteering for POWER or supporting the agency, by demonstrating a commitment to the women POWER serves or by expressing an understanding of addiction as a disease and showing a desire to de-stigmatize addiction, educating the community about its effects on women, children, families and communities; and,
WHEREAS, Moe Coleman, a revered community organizer and social work professional, was selected to receive the Window of Hope Award because of his role in shaping POWER as an organization and for acting as a mentor to POWER co-founder, Terry Miller, and whose support and guidance were instrumental in the founding and success of POWER;and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Moe Coleman is Director Emeritus of the Institute of Politics of the University of Pittsburgh and Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work with a joint appointment with the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs and Urban Studies; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend POWER for its remarkable work with women in recovery and congratulates Dr. Moe Coleman for the contrib...
