• Title: Now, Therefore, be it resolved that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Director William T. Simmons, Esq. and staff for their endless contribution and dedication to our communities and our children; and Be It Further Resolved, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim May 5th-7th, 2009 as the “Shuman Juvenile Detention Center 35th Anniversary Celebration” in the City of Pittsburgh.

Whereas, in 1936 the Juvenile Court was built on Forbes Avenue in the Oakland area of the City of Pittsburgh.  During the 1960s, due to a significant population increase and need for improved services, a search began for a new home for the detention center.  As a result, in December 1974, Shuman Juvenile Detention Center opened at 7150 Highland Drive in the East End area of Pittsburgh; and

Whereas, the mission of the center is, "to provide safe, secure custody and to promote the health and well-being of youths committed to its care" and, "to create an environment that fosters social, emotional, intellectual and physical development;" and

Whereas,  this year the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center is celebrating its 35^th Anniversary from May 5^th-7^th, 2009, where the public is welcome to tour the facility, observe a mock hearing, and observe a panel discussion.
