Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes Israel's 61st Independence Day and Tel Aviv's centennial and thanks the United Jewish Federation for celebrating the anniversaries in Pittsburgh; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares April 29, 2009, “Yom Ha'atzmaut 2009 Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on April 29, 2009, the United Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh will hold the city's largest celebration of Israel at the Jewish Community Center in Squirrel Hill; and
 
WHEREAS, Yom Ha'atzmaut 2009 will recognize the 61st anniversary of Israel's Independence Day and the 100th anniversary of the city of Tel Aviv; and
 
WHEREAS, on May 14, 1948 the Jewish People's Council gathered at the Tel Aviv Museum and approved a proclamation declaring the establishment of the State of Israel; and
 
WHEREAS, Independence Day is celebrated by a speech from the speaker of the Knesset, a ritual march of soldiers carrying the flag of Israel, and the lighting of twelve torches; and
 
WHEREAS, Tel Aviv will celebrate its centennial year with dozens of events held in the City and around the world; and
 
WHEREAS, Tel Aviv has nearly one million people who enter the city daily for work, education, or entertainment.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes Israel's 61st Independence Day and Tel Aviv's centennial and thanks the United Jewish Federation for celebrating the anniversaries in Pittsburgh; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares April 29, 2009, "Yom Ha'atzmaut 2009 Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
