Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes Achieving in Higher Education with Autism/Developmental Disabilities for its efforts to assist students in meeting their post-secondary education goals; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares April 18, 2009, “Adult Autism Awareness Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Achieving in Higher Education with Autism/Developmental Disabilities (AHEADD) is a private, community organization that provides support for students in higher education with various types of learning disabilities and disorders; and
 
WHEREAS, AHEADD assists students in creating individual plans and strategies to address social, communication and organizational skills that will help students be independent in their college experience; and
 
WHEREAS, Carolyn Komich Hare founded AHEADD in 2002, when she piloted the program in response to a parent who was looking for specialized services to assist a student who would be attending Carnegie Mellon University; and
 
WHEREAS, the AHEADD Model™ was developed by analyzing the successes and failures of the program and can be applied on any college campus; and
 
WHEREAS, AHEADD will host the 1st annual Adult Autism Awareness Day at a day long event held at the University of Pittsburgh; and
 
WHEREAS, the event will feature panels of speakers discussing post-secondary education, post-secondary employment, research and legislation.
