WHEREAS, WQED Pittsburgh creates, produces and distributes quality programs, products and services to engage, inform, educate and entertain the public within its community and around the world ; and,
WHEREAS, WQED's mission of service to the community encompasses everything it does in television, radio, publishing, education and on the web; and,
WHEREAS, WQED Multimedia Pittsburgh encompasses the entire family of initiatives in education, broadcasting, journalism, entertainment and features projects such as ONQ Magazine, high quality children's programming , Pittsburgh History Series Programs with Rich Sebak, Telling America's Stories, Black Horizons, QED Cooks, WQED-FM and Pittsburgh Magazine; and,
WHEREAS, WQED-TV is the flagship of WQED Pittsburgh, having gone on the air for the first time on April 1, 1954, as the country's first community supported television station. Supported with start up funding from the A.W.Mellon Trust, the Ford Foundation, the Arbuckle-Jamison Foundation and school children who went door to door to collect $2.00 from families to help get the station on the air; and,
WHEREAS, WQED received the use of KDKA's FM tower and a building at the corner of Fifth and Bellefield in Oakland from the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company to launch what became one of the most important production centers of national programming for the Public Broadcasting Service.; and,
WHEREAS, WQED Multimedia is an award winning community asset, having received two Emmy Awards for Station Excellence and a myriad of recognitions in every area of production and programming ; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize WQED Multimedia and WQED for 55 years of outstanding service to the Pittsburgh Region; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, April 14, 2009 , to be “ WQED DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.
