Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and recognize the commander and crew the USS Pittsburgh for their sacrifice and dedication to duty; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, March 24, 2009, to be “USS PITTSBURGH DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the USS Pittsburgh, a Los Angeles class attack submarine laid down on April 15, 1983, and launched on December 8, 1984, was assigned to the U.S. Atlantic Fleet and homeported at Groton Connecticut; and,
 
WHEREAS, the submarine USS Pittsburgh (SSN 720) is the fourth American warship named for the City of Pittsburgh, the first being a sidewheel ironclad gunboat which helped gain control of the lower Mississippi River from the Confederacy; and,
 
WHEREAS, the USS Pittsburgh was commissioned on November 23, 1985, under Commander Raymond Setser and has seen service throughout the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea; and,
 
WHEREAS, in January of 1991, the USS Pittsburgh along with the USS Louisville conducted Tomahawk missile attacks into Iraq in support of operation Desert Storm; and,
 
WHEREAS, the USS Pittsburgh departed for the Mediterranean in October of 2002 when she once more was called upon to launch Tomahawk missile attacks during operation Iraqi Freedom; and,
 
WHEREAS, Commander Andrew C. Jarrett of Alexandria Virginia assumed command of the USS Pittsburgh on January 4, 2007, and whose crew includes Junior Officer of the Year Lt. Matt Walker, Junior Sailor of the Year Firecontrol Technician 2nd Class Dowen and senior enlisted member Chief Jay Gladu.
