BodyWHEREAS cancer will strike approximately 71,800 people in Pennsylvania this year; and
WHEREAS the daffodil is the first flower of spring, and since 1973 has been the American Cancer Society's symbol of hope that cancer can be beaten; and
WHEREAS 2009 marks the 36th year for the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days Program, with March 16-22, 2009 designated "Daffodil Days"; and
WHEREAS last year's Daffodil Days raised over $432,000 in the Greater Pittsburgh area. The Greater Pittsburgh Unit of the American Cancer Society has been number one in the nation in daffodil sales in the past four years; and
WHEREAS the goal for the 2009 campaign is to raise $445,000 throughout the Pittsburgh area, and a total of $1,151,000 throughout Western Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS over 1,000 residents will volunteer to help distribute and sell flowers during Daffodil Days. Amy Kaminski of Whitehall serves as chairperson for the event, with KDKA-TV's Sonni Abatta serving as the Honorary Chairwoman in Allegheny County.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, congratulates the American Cancer Society's Greater Pittsburgh Unit on its ongoing success with the Daffodil Days campaign, and wishes it even greater success with the 2009 campaign; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that March 16 through 22, 2009 is hereby declared "DAFFODIL DAYS" in the City of Pittsburgh.
