Title: Now therefore be it resolved that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes and applauds the efforts of the Allegheny County Council to establish its own County-wide Human Relations Commission.

Whereas the establishment of a County-wide Human Relations Commission is under consideration by the Allegheny County Council; and

Whereas Pittsburgh's history demonstrates strong support for ensuring the civil rights of all Americans; and

Whereas in 1954 Mayor David Lawrence was instrumental in the establishment of the Mayor's Commission on Human Relations to protect the employment and housing rights of all Pittsburghers; and

Whereas in 1976 this Commission was established as an independent agency of City government, via the City Charter, and renamed the Pittsburgh Human Relations Commission charged with protecting the rights of Pittsburghers to equal treatment in employment, housing, and public accommodation; and

Whereas in 1990 the Pittsburgh Human Relations Act was amended to add sexual orientation as a protected class entitled to equal treatment in employment, housing, and public accommodation; and

Whereas in 1965 the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was founded to protect the right of all Americans to equal treatment in employment; and

Whereas in 1955 the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission was founded to protect employment and housing rights of Pennsylvanians; and

Whereas the Director of the Pittsburgh Human Relations Commission is strongly in support of the establishment of a Human Relations Commission within Allegheny County government; and

Whereas Pittsburgh City Council strongly supports the efforts of the County to establish its own Human Relations Commission to protect the rights to equal treatment in employment, housing, and public accommodation of persons in protected classes including : Race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry or place of birth, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, marital status, familial status, or age.
