Title: Now, Therefore Be It Resolved By the Council of the City Of Pittsburgh a, that we hereby recognize and congratulate Senator Barack Obama on winning the general election for the Presidency of the United States of America. Be It Further Resolved, that we, on behalf of the City of Philadelphia, invite President-elect Obama to visit Pittsburgh during the month of January in 2009, on his way to his inauguration, to address the people of Pittsburgh by informing citizens how we can help him realize the promise of affordable and accessible health care for all.

Congratulating President-Elect Obama And Inviting Him To Pittsburgh To Promote Affordable And Accessible Health Care

WHEREAS, it is estimated that the vast majority of Pennsylvania's 767,000 uninsured adults have full-time jobs and many are employed by small businesses; and,

WHEREAS, the issue of the lack of affordable and accessible health care in Pennsylvania has a direct and adverse effect upon the people of Pennsylvania, its governmental units and businesses. We need acces to healthcare to create, grow and sustain our businesses and to provide basic governmental services; and

WHEREAS, the nation, indeed the world, finds itself in an economic crisis the likes of which we have not seen in generations This fact makes it all the more imperative that we act as a nation to resolve the long standing issues presented by the lack of affordable health care insurance for our citizens; and,
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh is renowned for its great achievements in the area of medicine - from Jonas Salk and the invention of the polio vaccine, to a cutting edge organ transplant center as well as a world leader in bio sciences and bio engineering. The City of Pittsburgh is home to a well-developed health care delivery systems and hospitals. Despite these significant accomplishments we have yet to discover how to best to provide the necessary insurance to directly connect our citizens to our world class health care institutions. For many living here these institutions might as well be thousands of miles from here; and,

WHEREAS, on November 4th, 2008, the people of the united States voted to elect President-elect Barak Obama who ran a campaign that featured a significant focus and promise of affordable and accessible health care for all Americans; and

WHEREAS, the right, and the need to have affordable and accessible health care is not a Democratic or a Republican partisan issue, but a human issue that should be a priority to all Americans.
