Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends Rebecca L. Flora for her service to the Pittsburgh region and her commitment to promoting sustainability, and wishes her luck in her new position and in future endeavors; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares Tuesday, December 9, 2008, “Rebecca Flora Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Rebecca L. Flora, a resident of Pittsburgh since 1985, will be moving on from the Green Building Alliance in order to accept the position of Senior Vice President of Education and Research with the U.S. Green Building Council; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Flora has provided valuable service to the Pittsburgh community both through her work for the City and her work for various other organizations in the region, and was named an “Environmental Hero for 2004” by Interiors & Sources magazine, and one of “The Top 50 Cultural Forces in Pittsburgh” by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Flora has been involved in the establishment, development, and leadership of a number of civic organizations including the Pittsburgh Civic Design Coalition, the University of Pittsburgh's Mascaro Sustainability Initiative, Phipps Conservatory, the Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development, and the South Side Local Development Company, and most recently, the Green Building Alliance; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure, the Green Building Alliance became a major advocate for green building in western Pennsylvania, and Pittsburgh became a national leader in green building; and

WHEREAS, among the Green Building Alliance's accomplishments under Ms. Flora's leadership were the creation and implementation of Pittsburgh's Climate Action Plan, the LEED Gold Certification of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, advocacy, fundraising, and advising for several LEED certified green building projects including Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Phipps Conservatory, Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, and the McGowan Institute, as well as the development of the Green Building Products Initiative (GBPI) to grow the green building product industry in Pennsylvania.
