WHEREAS, the Field Robotics Center at Carnegie Mellon University is celebrating its 25th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, the Field Robotics Center develops mobile robots capable of working in uncontrolled environments and performing tasks that are unsafe or dull for humans; and
WHEREAS, the Field Robotics Center's robots have operated successfully inside of active volcanoes, on the ice of Antarctica, inside of abandoned mines, in the basement of a crippled nuclear reactor, and amidst traffic on urban highways; and
WHEREAS, the Field Robotics Center's robots increase human safety and productivity, and enable exploration under harsh conditions; and
WHEREAS, William "Red" Whittaker is a world-renowned roboticist, educator, and pioneer in Field Robotics, and has inspired students throughout his career; and
WHEREAS, Red Whittaker is celebrating his 60th birthday; and
WHEREAS, Red Whittaker and the Field Robotics Center have enhanced the reputation and visibility of both Carnegie Mellon University and the City of Pittsburgh.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends Red Whittaker and the Field Robotics Center for their excellence in creating new technologies that make people's lives safer and more productive; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares Saturday, October, 25, 2008, "Field Robotics Center Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
