Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the O'Connor Family - Judy, Heidy and Richard Garth, Father Terry and Corey - and their loyal family and friends for their efforts to return the Cookie Cruise to its place on the Pittsburgh social calendar ; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, August 19, 2008, to be “RETURN OF THE COOKIE CRUISE DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the late Mayor Bob O'Connor began what became a Pittsburgh tradition when he closed the summer season and started his campaigns with a boat ride for a small group of family and friends ; and,

WHEREAS, that boat ride, which came to be known as the Cookie Cruise , grew to enormous proportions and served as the unofficial kick off of the political season for all candidates and elected officials and was the opportunity for the political community to gather; and,

WHEREAS, the Cookie Cruise acquired its name from the many friends and family of Mayor Bob O'Connor who baked thousands of cookies to serve as dessert and which gained attention from the media for its variety, selection and quantity of cookies and for its unique ability to attract diverse people from all walks of life; and,

WHEREAS, in an effort to honor Mayor O'Connor in a way in which he would have most appreciated, the O'Connor family and their friends have worked tirelessly to bring back the Cookie Cruise for the citizens of Pittsburgh by establishing the Bob O'Connor Memorial Fund at The Pittsburgh Foundation and designating the proceeds of the annual event to a different charity each year; and,

WHEREAS, the “Return of the Cookie Cruise” will take place on the Gateway Clipper Fleet's Flagship Majestic on Tuesday, August 19, 2008, with the proceeds going this year to the Highmark Caring Foundation, an organization in which Bob was actively involved and was a founding member of one of its signature programs, the Highmark Caring Place.
