Title: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby wish to show its support for this praiseworthy organization, while additionally commending this group of individuals for their dedication and service to the promotion of peace in the City of Pittsburgh. AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that upon the occasion of their 2nd Annual Community Unity Gathering, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares August 16, 2008, “Community Unity Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS on May 16, 2007, Fred (Scrappy) Bulls, English Burton, John Armes and Fred (Pookie) Forston sat down together to find a solution to stop violence in their community; and
 
WHEREAS these individuals, along with James Prude, Abbey Turner, Flora Wilson, Walt Butler, Reggie Ward, James Armes, Glenn Woodard, James Herring, William Thompkins, Sharon Goldsmith, and volunteers Deborah Bulls, Mildred Tyler, Arnetta Hazlip, Lydia Wilson, Maurice Prude, and Jennifer Russell have formed The Northside Old Timers; and
 
WHEREAS as first hand witnesses, and in some cases participants, of the common riots and violence of the 1960's, The Northside Old Timers have been advocates for change.  These ambitious men and women live to give back to the community by teaching others, promoting peace, and giving hope for the future; and
 
WHEREAS over the past year, this organization's accomplishments have shown their dedication and love for the community.  These accomplishments include hosting their first Community Unity Gathering with 2500 people, donating trick-or-treat bags for 9 communities, donating funds for Bidwell Presbyterian Youth College Tour, renting skating rinks on several occasions in order to give children from the community a chance to skate for free, and hosting a banquet to honor community residents for exceptional service.
